The Threefold Order of the Body Social – Study Series II

Two Addresses given by Dr. Steiner at Study Evenings in the Year 1920

By Rudolf Steiner
Translation by Ethel Bowen-Wedgwood
Stuttgart, GA 337 and GA 335

In the social ferment of postwar Europe in 1919, Steiner presented his ideas about reforming the basis of society in three fundamental, autonomous spheres: economic, political/rights, and cultural. For a short time he worked to bring his ideas into practical application but it soon became impossible to bring about a “threefold social order” and he withdrew from the outer work in this area. His ideas have been worked with over the decades since that time and have proved to be just as valid today as they were then.

In this second volume are presented two addresses given by Dr. Steiner at study evenings in the year 1920. The first lecture, given on September 15th, is from GA 335, and the second lecture is from GA 337.

This volume is presented here with the kind permission of the Rudolf Steiner Nachlassverwaltung, Dornach, Switzerland.

The Philosophy of Freedom (Wilson) (Books Section)

This book, written in 1894, is a fundamental treatment of Steiner’s philosophical outlook. Together with Truth and Science and The Riddles of Philosophy, it might be considered as one third of a philosophical trilogy. The emphasis of the book is not on freedom as ordinarily understood, but on freiheit or what might be termed freeness. This freeness is a self-starting, self-directing activity of a spiritual sort. Here, the term spiritual is used in a sense not incompatible with the use of the word in the tradition of the German idealistic school of philosophy.

Awakening to Community (Lectures Section)

These lectures, given after the burning of the first Goetheanum and before the refounding of the Anthroposophical Society, form an important part of the history of the Anthroposophical Movement. Steiner calls for a ‘searching of conscience’ and without reservation makes an assessment of the Movement ‘free from illusions.’ He explains that in anthroposophical communities we can experience our first awakening to the spirit in our encounters with others and describes how the ‘reversed cultus’ forms the foundation for a new community life.
